“Excellent Steakhouse Experience, but Best If You Have a Hotel Credit”
Executive Summary: High-quality ingredients, polished preparation, and exceptional service make The Oak Door a very good onsite dining option at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, but the value proposition is harder to justify without a hotel dining credit. We had a $100 USD (¥16,000) credit to use during our ...stay at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, so we decided on dinner for two at The Oak Door, the hotel’s steakhouse. Even on a Thursday night, the restaurant was quite busy. We both ordered the Steakhouse Set with the Hokkaido Tenderloin. The meal started with the Fruit Tomato—crisp, clean, and naturally sweet, with a touch of salt that brought out the flavor. The crab cake was also very good: nicely held together without being dense or overly doughy. The tenderloin was a relatively small portion, but it was beautifully seared, tender, and sliced before serving. Dessert included a baked cheesecake and a tart shell filled with cream and sweet blueberries, providing a nice finish to the meal. Positives: Excellent ingredients, refined preparation, and exceptional service in a lively, upscale setting. Negative: For the portion sizes and overall experience, it didn’t feel like particularly strong value. We enjoyed our dinner and would recommend The Oak Door to guests staying at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, particularly if you have a dining credit to use. Would I make a special trip here if I weren’t staying at the hotel? Probably not.

“Sadly 2 star.”
It’s rare for us to leave a negative review, but this was very disappointing—especially at around $700 US for three people. We ordered a bottle of champagne, a martini, and a glass of red wine. The service was friendly, though not particularly attentive. The booth seating felt awkward, with tables ...(built in and unmoveable) set too far from the seats, making it uncomfortable to dine. We’re not short, so it’s hard to imagine how others would find it. The lighting was also quite dim, making the menu difficult to read. In hindsight, it may have been our mistake choosing a steakhouse in Japan. Rather than offering something uniquely Japanese, it felt like it was trying to replicate an American-style steakhouse experience similar to Ruth’s Chris. Unfortunately, the food did not meet expectations. The white asparagus soup lacked flavor, the steaks were mediocre, and one was undercooked even after being sent back. The potatoes were also underwhelming and tasteless. Overall, not the experience we had hoped for.

“Smooth and Enjoyable Lunch Experience”
I visited The Oak Door at Grand Hyatt Tokyo for a family lunch ahead of our wedding, and it was a very pleasant experience. The service was smooth and attentive throughout without ever feeling overbearing, which we really appreciated for a relaxed gathering. The burger lunch set was also excellent—w...ell-prepared, satisfying, and a great choice for a casual but quality meal. Many thanks to the team for making the occasion easy and enjoyable. We look forward to visiting again. (Special thanks to Sam and Riyad for their thoughtful service.)

“What happened to this great bar?”
So sad to see what has happened to one of the best bars in Tokyo. Poor service, no atmosphere and therefore no customers, what has the management done to this great bar?
